Frequently Asked Questions
Facts about water damage restoration — cost, timelines, insurance, the restoration process, and how our directory works.
What is water damage restoration?
Water damage restoration is the process of drying, cleaning, sanitizing, and repairing a property after flooding, a burst pipe, a leak, or a storm. It typically combines water extraction, structural drying, mold prevention, and rebuilding of damaged materials.
What's the difference between water damage restoration and water damage cleanup?
Cleanup is the first phase: extracting standing water, removing ruined materials, and drying the structure. Restoration is the broader process — cleanup plus sanitization, mold prevention, and rebuilding damaged walls, floors, and fixtures to pre-loss condition.
How fast should I call a restoration company?
Within the first hour. Drywall, wood, and carpet begin absorbing water within minutes, and mold growth can start in 24–48 hours. The faster water is extracted, the lower the total cost of repair.
What should I do before the restoration company arrives?
If safe, shut off the water source and the electricity to affected areas. Remove valuables and small furniture from wet zones. Take photos and videos of all damage for your insurance claim. Do not attempt to use household appliances in a flooded room.
Does homeowners insurance cover water damage?
Most policies cover sudden and accidental water damage — burst pipes, appliance failure, storm-driven water. Gradual leaks, unmaintained plumbing, and flooding from rising groundwater are typically excluded. A standalone flood policy is needed for the latter.
How do I know if my damage will be covered?
Document everything the moment you discover it — photos, video, the source of the water, the time it happened. Call your insurer and a licensed restoration company the same day. Restoration companies experienced with insurance claims know what documentation carriers require.
How much does water damage restoration cost?
Most residential projects fall between $1,500 and $6,000. Small isolated leaks can be under $1,000, while full-home flooding with structural and mold remediation can exceed $20,000. Commercial projects start higher, typically $5,000 and up.
What's the difference between clean water, gray water, and black water damage?
Clean water (Category 1) comes from a supply line or faucet and is the easiest to restore. Gray water (Category 2) is from appliances or showers and contains contaminants. Black water (Category 3) is from sewage or storm flooding and requires full sanitization and often partial teardown. Cost scales with the category.
Can water damage cause mold?
Yes. Mold can begin growing in 24–48 hours on any porous surface that stays damp. Full structural drying, dehumidification, and antimicrobial treatment are what prevent mold from becoming a second — often more expensive — problem.
How long does the restoration process take?
Water extraction: a few hours. Structural drying: 3–5 days. Rebuilding (drywall, flooring, paint): 1–3 weeks depending on scope. Plan for 2–4 weeks total on a typical residential project.
Are the companies listed on Water Damage Restore vetted?
Every listing is sourced from verified Google Maps data. We filter to only companies with a rating of 3.5 or above and at least 5 real customer reviews, then rank by a weighted score that combines rating and review count. Claimed listings are additionally reviewed by our team.
How are businesses ranked in each city?
Companies are sorted by a score of rating × log(reviews + 1). This means a 4.8-star company with 200 reviews ranks above a 5-star company with 3 reviews — it rewards both quality and track record. Promoted listings appear at the top.
Can I trust the reviews shown?
Ratings and review counts are pulled directly from Google Maps, the same source consumers see on Google Search. We don't edit, curate, or reweight individual reviews.
How do I list my business?
Submit your company through the Add Your Business form. Free listings appear in city search results, include call and website buttons, and typically go live within 2–3 business days after we verify the details.
